SPECS safety camera system
The SPECS system uses state of the art video surveillance with automatic number plate reading technology. The specs uses a minimum of two cameras fitted with infra red illuminators on gantries above the road making them work in day or night time. The SPECS speed camera will calculate your average speed between the two cameras.
The SPECS average speed cameras are fitted at the roadside or the central reservation and are a set distance apart to create a speed controlled zone, or where groups of cameras are linked they create a speed controlled network.
As a vehicle passes between the entry and exit points their number plates are recorded whether speeding or not. The system then matches the plates and pairs them, and because each image carries a date and time stamp the computer works out the average speed between the cameras. SPECS uses no film.
SPECS are used on dual carriageways and motorways because the system can be used to monitor all lanes of traffic.
SPECS speed camera systems are currently in use in permanent locations in the following counties:
Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Greater London, Northern Ireland, Strathclyde, Cornwall, Gloucestershire and South Yorkshire.
In addition SPECS average speed cameras are being used in the following temporary locations: Hertfordshire, Kent, Wiltshire/Berkshire, Devon, Perthshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire and West Midlands.
In the UK your likely to receive 3 points on your licence and a £60.00 fine if your caught by a SPECS camera. However a bill is working its way through parliament that could increase these amounts.
Whilst we don’t want to speed most of us on todays roads are trying our best to navigate from a to b in the safest way possible and a small lapse in concentration can result in a ticket and fine. Which is why we need some sort of assistance be it satellite navigation or a GPS speed camera detection system.
Speed camera detectors alert drivers to dangers in the road ahead keeping you and your passengers safe. Whilst it is not a speed cameras intention to catch speeders they are designed to reduce accidents and detection devices help alert drivers to their presence contributing to road safety.
