What is a radar detector?
A radar detector is a small device that is mounted on the dashboard of a vehicle. Its purpose is to alert the driver to the presence of any police speed traps within the area. This allows the driver time to slow down before reaching the speed trap.
How can it help me?
Radar detectors are specially designed to help you to drive safely within the confines of today’s speed limits, they quickly and easily alert you to the presence of Police Speed traps which are often found located at Accident Black spots, indicating potentially dangerous and hazardous situations.
How does radar work?
Police radar transceivers, including Gatso cameras and Radar guns, operate by sending out radio signals at a set frequency, which are reflected by the target vehicle. The reflected signal's frequency is shifted in direct proportion to the vehicle's speed and this shift is used by the transceiver to calculate the vehicle's exact speed.
How do detectors locate radar?
A radar signal is conical in shape, much like a torch beam. At 200 yards, the normal range of a radar gun, the signal is as wide as a dual carriageway. Most of the signal therefore goes past the target and on up the road reflecting off trees, houses etc, eventually becoming "radar scatter". Snoopers are extremely sensitive radio receivers tuned to these frequencies and can detect very small particles of "radar scatter" at up to 2 miles in some cases.
How do GPS Speed camera detectors work?
GPS speed camera detectors are able to download the location of all fixed speed cameras and accident blackspots which are stored on a constantly updated database. As you travel in your vehicle the unit is constantly updating warning you of these locations.
Are they legal?
Following an Appeal Court ruling in January 1998 it is concluded
that Radar Detectors are completely legal to own and use in the
UK. However, please check local laws
before using a radar/laser detector outside of the UK. Our LAW
section covers this in much more detail.
Are there any other costs apart from the initial purchase price?
GPS Detectors can only function properly with the use of satellite
technology constantly updating the unit, therefore when you purchase
your GPS detector you are tied to an Annual fee (which can vary
from company to company).
Radar Detectors do not use satellites, they simply detect a radar
beam, therefore they do not require updating and your only cost
is the initial purchase price.
